Slide background Going for the gold must-haves!

Move over Christmas, for sports-obsessed gals like us, the Olympics is the most wonderful time of the year (well every two years). Parades of terrific physiques, displays of super human strength, edge-of-your-seat competitions, feeling warm and fuzzy towards the US of A and spandex, acres of spandex. From downhill skiing to snowboarding half pipe, from women’s figure skating short program to curling, we are pumped for the weeks ahead.

This week we wanted to kick off the ceremonies by featuring a list of must-haves to help you through the Games. We also were lucky enough to sit down with 3 Olympians vying for a spot on the podium this year. Free-skiier Brita Sigourney, hockey heavyweight Hilary Knight and mogul maven Heather McPhie all discussed what it takes to make it to the top, how they each find their own balance and what they hope to provide for generations of future female Olympians to come. We will also take a peak at some fashions inspired by the slopes yet appropriate for pilates in this week’s photo essay, profile our newest basics from Pilot Athletic and finally we are pleased to introduce you to our newest brand Slog, from South Korea. Seaglass hues, flattering cuts and whimsical prints make this a great gym-bag addition.

Let the games begin,

Whether you're standing on the podium or sitting on the couch, this week's essentials will keep you at GOLD metal status.
So it finally happened. Our dreams have come true. Beats and Alex Wang got together and made magic. Headphones magic. The limited edition, super sleek, pale gold and matte black Studio headphones offer noise cancellation, rechargeable battery and re-engineered sound. Complete with winning accents, this pair will make your march to the awards ceremony that much more victorious.
It’s always good to have layers handy when you come off the ice. Bonus points for a cozy cover-up that keeps you warm. Pilot Athletic's terry hoodie is a workout staple that we can't get enough of. Luxurious french terry, oversized pockets and wide drawstring make this hoodie a step up from your days on the rink as a kid. Did we say "toe pick?"
Boasting a subtropical climate, Russia’s Sochi is not exactly experiencing the polar vortex like some of us over here in the States, but temps can drop in the night and even hockey rinks in California can get a bit nippy so we recommend not leaving the house without one of these. Sleek, compact design, 12 hours of lasting warmth and reusable, this Zippo hand warmer will keep the chill off your tootsies.

It’s always good to have layers handy when you come off the ice. Bonus points for a cozy cover-up that actually enhances your long program costume. Please let us introduce you to Pilot Athletics’ mesh jumper. Wide fishnet mesh allows for breathability and will still let some of that sequin appliqué shine through. We prefer a basic black sports bra.
So the probability of you enjoying the whole Olympics thing from the comfort of your couch is pretty high. It’s ok. Not everyone can go for the gold. BUT you can join in solidary with the athletes that do prove to be the best in your own way. A manicure. It is no secret that we at Carbon38 value painted digits. When we came across this 24karat gold polish we had to have it. Inspired by Versailles but we think it truly evokes the glinting medallion from around our new-age gladiators’ necks.

LET'S TALK WORKOUT. ON ANY GIVEN DAY, WHAT IS YOUR TYPICAL ROUTINE? HOW DO YOU BALANCE?
In the off-season, I workout 5 days a week in the gym. Every day is different; I try to get a good balance of core, strength and conditioning.

Slide background TELL US THE STORY BEHIND YOUR JOURNEY FROM POOL TO THE SLOPES TO THE HALFPIPE.
Growing up, I played water polo in the fall and skied on the weekends in the winter/spring. My parents would drive me 5 hours every weekend to Alpine Meadows so I could practice. I tried it all: Moguls, Ariels, Big Air, Slopestyle and Halfpipe. I decided that I needed to pick one and concentrate on it, so I decided on Halfpipe. Everything about it, I loved and all of the people that were in the sport. It’s just so different than anything else.

YOU'VE HAD INJURIES IN THE PAST FEW SEASONS BUT STILL REMAIN STRONG. WHAT WOULD BE THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WOULD GIVE OTHER ATHLETES WITH SETBACKS?
I would say to do everything you can to get physically healthy and to look into the future and not dwell in the past. Also, listen to your body, it will let you know when you are ready to get back.

WHAT'S THE BEST PART OF LEADING UP TO THE OLYMPIC TRIALS?
The best part of the trials was just knowing that I was a part of the very first Olympic trials for freeskiing. We made history in our sport this year. It feels great to be a part of that.

WORDS TO LIVE BY?
“Somewhere behind the athlete you’ve become, the practices, the coaches who pushed you, the meets you’ve competed in, the long time dedication and the friendships you made along the way, there is a little girl who fell in love with skiing; ski for her.”

YOU STARTED OUT IN GYMNASTICS. HAS THAT FOUNDATION HELPED YOU ON THE SLOPES?
Definitely! The body awareness I learned from gymnastics has been really helpful, especially once we were allowed to start flipping in 2003!

2013 HAS BEEN A VERY SUCCESSFUL YEAR FOR YOU, TAKING HOME A NATIONAL TITLE AND 3 WORLD CUP WINS. WHAT DO YOU ATTRIBUTE THAT SUCCESS TO? KNOWING WHAT YOU KNOW NOW, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU HAVE GIVEN TO THE HEATHER OF 2005?
I attribute my success in 2013 to years and years of practice on the slopes, the work I have done in the gym, work with my mental strength coach, and all of the people who have continually helped along this journey. The main piece of advice I would have given myself in 2005 would be to believe in myself, and listen to my own instincts and answers over anyone else’s.

AS A PROFESSIONAL ATHLETE GEARING UP FOR SOCHI, HOW DO YOU TAKE TIME FOR YOURSELF?
Time for myself is a tricky one these days! I do yoga almost every day that I ski and that is a great quiet time for me. I’ve learned to appreciate every minute I have to find quiet among the hustle and bustle. Also, I’ve come to enjoy our travel days for the most part, as I get some time on the plane for myself. My main balance is in my family and friends outside of skiing. I have an incredible network of amazing people in my life and they help keep me grounded, remind me that I am so much more than a mogul skier, and help take my mind off of things when I feel stressed.

AS A VETERAN OLYMPIAN, WHAT DID YOU LEARN FROM VANCOUVER ABOUT YOURSELF?
I learned that there is nothing like the Olympics! No matter how much you’ve dreamed about it, thought you understood it from talking to other people, or how prepared you felt, it is so much bigger than any individual, and it is incredibly powerful. I will take that knowledge into Sochi to help me appreciate each moment even more.

Thinking what would “Brain” from Pinky and the Brain (Tv show) do—Try and take over the world. Don’t know if it’s possible…that’s why I have to think about it.

WHAT WILL YOU BE DOING IN 15 YEARS?
Really difficult question-not sure what I will be doing tomorrow.

WORDS TO LIVE BY, FAVORITE QUOTE
“I have measured out my life with coffee spoons.” T.S. Eliot

AS A PROFESSIONAL ATHLETE GEARING UP FOR SOCHI, HOW DO YOU TAKE TIME TO YOURSELF? WHERE DO YOU FIND YOUR BALANCE?
I am usually a pretty quiet person, and I like to recharge during my down time away from any commitments—in the summer, I like to mountain bike, white water raft, and golf. In the winter, I like to try and sneak my way onto the mountain for a good powder sesh.

Slide background YOU HAVE BEEN A STANDOUT FROM A VERY EARLY AGE. HOW DO YOU KEEP THE MOMENTUM AS YOU GEAR UP TOWARDS SOCHI?
I gain confidence from routine things, and I take pride in the little things. A combination of continuing to do those things that got me to this level as well as stepping on the ice with a diligent purpose to work on the things I need to work on and get better at…

AS A WOMAN IN A MALE-DOMINATED SPORT OF HOCKEY, HOW DO YOU CARVE YOUR PATH? WHAT PIECE OF ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE YOUNG WOMEN LOOKING TO MAKE WAVES?
Woman or Man, focus on the sport. Play hockey, love what you do, set goals and each time you step on that ice work towards those goals. My mantra is Dare to Be ! Find what motivates you, and live it up!!!

AS A VETERAN OLYMPIAN, WHAT DID YOU LEARN FROM VANCOUVER ABOUT YOURSELF OR THE SPORT THAT YOU WILL BE APPLYING TO THIS GO-ROUND?
I would like to think that I am more of a seasoned veteran, and a smarter player in 2014 than when I was as the youngest in 2010. I have had an amazing opportunity to be apart of this journey and train with and among the best. Our preparedness this time through far exceeds my previous expectations going into the last Olympic games, so I am excited to represent the United States and compete on a world stage in Sochi 2014.
